BEFORE SURGERY
To ensure that your preoperative process goes smoothly please follow these guidelines
Notify your PHYSICIAN before coming to the center if there is any change in your physical condition, such as fever or cold.
If you have a history of a chronic condition, ( such as: heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea) or any condition which you are
unsure of, please bring a letter of clearance for surgery from your regular medical doctor to ensure that your surgery will not have to be postponed.
You will be contacted the day prior to your scheduled surgery by a member of our nursing staff with specific instructions. If you are not contacted within
24 hours of your scheduled surgery, please call the surgery center.
Leave all valuables at home, including jewelry and cash. MSC cannot be responsible for damaged or lost property.
Do not wear contact lens. Wear glasses and bring a case for their safekeeping. We do have containers available for dentures and bridgework.
The night before surgery follow instructions given by the nursing staff of MSC in regards to eating and medications. Most surgeries are scheduled
during the morning hours; therefore, you will not be allowed anything to eat or drink after midnight. On the morning of surgery, you may brush your teeth,
remembering not to swallow anything.
DAY OF SURGERY
To help meet all of your needs and to maintain safety please follow these guidelines:
You MUST have arrangements made for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you the first 24 hours following surgery.
YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE.
Please bathe or shower prior to your surgery. Remove all makeup, hair pieces, and jewelry (including all body jewelry). Do not use lotions or
oils after bathing.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as sweat suits and easy-to-button shirts or blouses that are big enough to accommodate a large bandage
after surgery.Wear comfortable shoes. REMEMBER to leave all valuables at home. Bring only a photo ID, Insurance information, and payment due to the center
Bring all of your regular medications or a list of medications to the center as instructed by the nursing staff.
Be prepared to sign forms upon arrival giving consent for filing of insurance, release of information, and consent of operation.
If the patient is a minor (under 18) a parent or guardian must accompany the patient and sign the necessary papers.
If you have an advance directive (living will or durable power of attorney), bring a copy with you. Since MSC does not honor advance
directives, this will be made part of your chart.
A nurse will escort you from the waiting room into the preoperative area where she will assist you in preparing for your surgery This will include
providing you with a gown, starting of an IV, and obtaining the necessary lab work. In addition, you will be interviewed by an anesthesiologist as well
as the nursing personnel participating in your care. Your family will be asked to wait in the waiting room. Following your surgery, the surgeon will come
to the waiting room to speak with your family.
MSC does not allow more than 2 people to escort patients to the facility. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed except as a patient.
AFTER SURGERY
REMEMBER! You will not be allowed to drive and must have a responsible adult to receive your post-op instructions and to drive you home and remain
with you for 24 hours.
Before you leave the center you will receive written instructions for your care at home. These will be reviewed with you and your care giver prior to
discharge, and any questions may be addressed.
Your opinion is very important to MSC and we ask that either you or a family member fill out the satisfaction survey upon discharge. This may be returned
to the RR nurse or mailed back to the center in the self addressed envelope. Your input will allow us to continually improve in the care, service, and
safety that is provided by the staff of Memphis Surgery Center
Upon arrival home, follow your physician's instructions regarding diet, rest, medication and activity. Unless otherwise directed, you should start
your diet back with clear liquids... You may feel dizzy, sleepy, or a little light-headed for several hours following your surgery. Do not sign any
important papers or make any significant decisions for at least 24 hours following your surgery.
If you have any questions or problems after surgery, please contact your physician.
A nurse from MSC will contact you a few days following your surgery to see how you are and answer any additional questions that you might have.
Do not drive a car, smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, operate machinery or cook for 24 hours after surgery.
IF an emergency should arise, contact your physician and /or local emergency room. MSC does not offer emergency services.
